Assistant Director of Information Technology Job Description

Generally, the Assistant Director of Information Technology is the second-in-command at a company and works closely with the Director or Vice President of Information Technology.

The Assistant Director is responsible for the day-to-day management of IT personnel and directs and manages various IT projects, such as new product development, infrastructure changes, upgrades, and so on.

The assistant director is accountable for all operational aspects of the director’s department, including:

  • The setting of goals and objectives;
  • The completion of assigned tasks within deadlines;
  • Ensuring that assigned personnel are following policies and procedures;
  • The preparation of reports and budgets; and more.

Responsibilities

The Assistant Director is responsible for a wide range of IT duties. Below is a list of typical activities:

Management

The Assistant Director must fill many roles relating to managing personnel. One such role is that of manager. As such, the Assistant Director is accountable for ensuring that the department has the necessary resources, such as finances and staff, to complete ongoing and future projects. 

Additionally, the Assistant Director must manage departmental projects, such as the development and implementation of new policies and procedures to ensure compliance with corporate goals and objectives. The Assistant Director must also identify and resolve problems relating to departmental operations, such as budgetary concerns.

Management of Information Technology projects is a key responsibility of the Assistant Director. As such, the Assistant Director must ensure that policies and procedures are in place to ensure that all IT projects are completed on time and within budget. The Assistant Director must also be able to communicate effectively with the department’s staff and project managers to ensure that changes or updates to projects are communicated effectively and on time.

Supervision

The Assistant Director is accountable for the supervision of all departmental personnel, including overseeing their performance; providing corrective feedback where necessary; and managing their individual training needs.

The Assistant Director must also ensure that all team members and staff members adhere to corporate standards and policies and report any violations or potential violations immediately. Under the supervision of the Director, the Assistant Director must also ensure that all staff members are following the procedures outlined in the policies and procedures manual. 

The Assistant Director is also accountable for ensuring that persons under his supervision are receiving satisfactory performance reviews.

Planning/Organizing

The Assistant Director must develop and maintain accurate time management skills to complete all of his responsibilities on time. Also, the Assistant Director must be able to prioritize his daily tasks and plan accordingly to ensure that each task is completed within deadlines.

The Assistant Director must also be able to organize projects, identify potential problems, and resolve them before they occur. Additionally, the Assistant Director must create project plans that include timelines, milestones, budgets, and personnel requirements. This ensures that projects are completed on schedule.

The Assistant Director must also be able to identify and resolve problems relating to departmental operations, such as budgetary concerns. Additionally, the Assistant Director must ensure that all information systems are working properly and that backups are in place.
