Information Technology Management (ITM) is a function that performs and manages information technology. In an organizational context, Information Technology Management is the function that provides information technology services to support business activities.

ITM is responsible for the planning, implementation, operation, maintenance, and improvement of technology services to support the business. It is an umbrella for multiple roles and responsibilities which affect IT services.

Key Roles in Information Technology Management 

The key roles in ITM are:

1. IT Director 

The IT Director is responsible for the overall IT strategy, planning, and growth. He/She ensures that the organization’s IT systems are aligned to support business strategy and objectives. Additionally, he/she is responsible for developing a vision for the future of IT at his/her organization.

  • Developing an IT strategy and aligning it with the business strategy.
  • Developing an IT budget to meet the goals of his/her department.
  • Ensuring that all technology complies with industry standards, government regulations, and best practices.
  • Working with cross-functional teams to execute major projects to improve the efficiency of technology services in the organization.

2. IT Manager

The IT Manager is responsible for managing his/her team. He/She is in charge of managing human resources, ensuring timely completion of projects, and monitoring the overall performance of the team. He/She also ensures that his/her team is trained to develop technical skills and business acumen.

  • Managing the IT team and recruiting new employees.
  • Training the team on new technologies and methodologies.

3. Business Analyst 

The Business Analyst is responsible for analyzing business processes to support business requirements, developing functional specifications, and documenting business policies related to technology use.

Business Analysts are responsible for meeting the needs of the business by developing technical specifications and preparing documents that are used to define how technology will support business processes.

4. Project Manager 

The Project Manager is responsible for planning, managing, tracking, and coordinating projects. He/She is responsible for building schedules, defining milestones, assigning resources, managing problems, and managing conflicts. His/her main objective is to meet the planned project deliverables within the given time and budget.
